The endless tick-tick-tick is the single most common Wolf range complaint we hear in Orange County — sometimes the burner clicks but won't light, sometimes it keeps sparking after the flame is already burning, and in the worst version every burner clicks with all the knobs turned off. The good news: on a Wolf this is almost never a serious failure. It's a short list of well-understood causes, and one detail of how Wolf wires its ranges explains the weirdest symptom of all.
1. Moisture in the igniter — the #1 cause, and often free to fix
A boil-over, a spill, or an enthusiastic deep-clean gets water into the burner base, and the spark electrode grounds out through the dampness — so it clicks continuously, even with the burner off. This is by far the most common cause and the only one you can fix yourself: let the cooktop dry out for 24 hours (or speed it up by running other burners nearby, never a hair dryer near an open gas valve). 2. Misaligned burner cap after cleaning
Wolf sealed burners have a machined cap that has to sit perfectly flat and rotated into its detent. After cleaning, a cap that's a few millimeters off keeps the flame from wrapping to the flame-sensing side of the electrode, so the igniter never "sees" the flame and keeps sparking. Lift the cap and reseat it flat — this fixes a surprising share of clicking-after-lighting complaints, and it costs nothing to check.
3. A sticking igniter switch — why ONE bad switch makes ALL burners click
This is the Wolf-specific diagnosis that stumps generalist technicians. Each burner knob has an igniter switch, and on a Wolf they're wired in parallel to a single shared spark module — so when one switch sticks closed or shorts internally (often from a spill wicking into it), every burner on the range clicks at once, even with all knobs off. Owners understandably think the whole range has gone haywire; it's actually one failed switch, isolated with a meter in minutes and replaced same-day. If your whole rangetop is clicking with the knobs off, this is the most likely culprit.
4. Worn or cracked spark electrode
The white ceramic insulator around the spark electrode can crack from years of heat cycles or a knock during cleaning. A cracked insulator lets the spark leak to ground instead of jumping to the burner — so you hear clicking but get a weak spark, a spark in the wrong place, or no light at all. On a range that's cooked for a decade this is routine wear, and the electrode is a standard replaceable Wolf part.
5. Failing spark module
The spark module is the box that generates the high-voltage pulses for all the burners. When it starts to fail you get weak or intermittent sparking on every burner, clicking that continues randomly, or burners that need many seconds to light. Because the module is shared, module symptoms show on all burners at once — which is also true of a bad switch, so this is a case for testing with a meter rather than guessing: the module and the switches are different parts at different prices, and swapping the wrong one is the expensive way to find out.
