If your dryer drum spins and the cycle runs, but clothes come out cold and damp — or it takes two or three cycles to dry a normal load — it's almost always one of these five things:
1. Blown thermal fuse
The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that cuts power to the heater if the dryer overheats — usually because the vent got clogged with lint. Once it blows, the dryer keeps tumbling but never heats again until the fuse is replaced. This is the single most common cause we find, and it almost always means the vent needs cleaning too, or the new fuse will blow the same way.
2. Failed heating element (electric) or igniter (gas)
In an electric dryer, the heating element is a long coil that glows red-hot; over years of heating and cooling it eventually snaps, and the dryer runs with zero heat. In a gas dryer, the equivalent failure is the igniter or the gas valve coils — you may hear the dryer click and try to light, then give up. Both are standard, well-priced repairs once properly diagnosed.
3. Tripped breaker — the electric-dryer trap
Electric dryers run on a double 240-volt breaker, and it's possible for just one half to trip. The half that's still on keeps the drum spinning and the lights working, so the dryer looks fine — it just never heats. Before assuming anything is broken, find the dryer breaker in your panel, flip it fully OFF, then back ON. This one costs nothing and fixes more "broken" dryers than people expect.
4. Clogged vent line
Lint builds up in the duct between the dryer and the outside wall, and airflow drops until the dryer can't shed moisture — clothes stay damp even though the heater technically works, and everything feels hotter than usual. In many Orange County homes the laundry hookup is in the garage with a long vent run, which clogs faster than a short straight duct. A clogged vent isn't just a drying problem: lint against a hot heater is the classic dryer-fire scenario, so this one shouldn't be left alone.
5. Bad thermostat or cycling thermostat
The cycling thermostat turns the heater on and off to hold the target temperature. When it fails, the dryer may heat weakly, heat for a minute and quit, or not heat at all. It's cheap as a part but hard to identify without a multimeter, since the symptoms overlap with the fuse and the element — this is exactly what a diagnostic visit sorts out in a few minutes.
Is it safe to keep running it?
If the dryer simply doesn't heat, running it won't damage anything — it just won't dry. But if it's not drying because of a clogged vent, keep it off until the vent is cleared: restricted airflow makes the heater chamber run hot, and lint plus trapped heat is how dryer fires start. And never bypass or "jump" a blown thermal fuse to get heat back — that fuse blew for a reason, and removing the protection is genuinely dangerous.
